Resident Care Worker

The Resident Care Worker program is designed to help students gain the knowledge and skills required to provide care in long term care facilities and home care settings. They will gain an appreciation for personal support services, community services, and physical and mental health care services required by individuals in order for them to be able to function as independently as possible.

Students will gain the ability to function within a client-centered multidisciplinary team of health professionals and para-professionals while providing quality health care services. Students will also gain an appreciation for the concept of normalisation when caring for individuals throughout their life span, while respecting the principles of independence, dignity, safety and security as they relate to clients and their families.


Admission requirements
  • High School Diploma
  • Adult High School Diploma
  • GED Diploma of High School Equivalency
  • Medical certification indicating the fitness of the applicant
  • Police Records check
  • Immunization for Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis
A growing number of health care facilities are requiring students to complete the medical certification before on the job training.

Program of studies
Resident Care Worker Certification will be awarded after 28 weeks of full-time study (240 hours of class time and 544 hours of clinical experience).

Special considerations
Individuals considering this type of training must have a sincere desire to work closely with people who are sometimes vulnerable and in difficult situations. Students must be in good physical health and should possess good organisational skills as well as the ability to be flexible and adaptable.
In certain settings, where the possibility of coming into contact with contagious diseases, immunisation will be necessary.

One should also note that the employers have the right to ask for a police criminal check through the RCMP information data base.
