WELLINGTON (PEI) - January 7, 2014 - The next cohort of students in the practical nursing program began their studies this week at Collège de l'Île In Wellington. This is the second group of students to complete the program in French in the province. The College offers this program through two important partnerships - Holland College and Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick (CCNB).

Students will follow the practical nursing program developed by the Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick with graduates receiving a joint Collège de l'Île and CCNB diploma. To enable them to write their exam in French, graduates take the national exam in New Brunswick under the auspices of the Association of Licensed Practical Nurses of New Brunswick. After passing the exam, graduates will receive their license to practice in New Brunswick also allowing them to practice in Prince Edward Island or elsewhere.

The partnership with Holland College is also essential in allowing joint clinical placements. This joint training facilitates hospital placements because of the very limited number of places in hospitals to accommodate a new cohort. This partnership also allows Anglophone and Francophone students to develop working relationships prior to arrival in the labor market.

The two-year program in Practical Nursing is accredited by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of New Brunswick and received funding from Health Canada through the National Health Training Consortium.
